BMW Z4 Car Insurance Rates
Is insurance expensive for a BMW? What insurance group is BMW Z4? Let’s look at auto insurance for a BMW Z4 more closely.
BMW car insurance does tend to be pricey, mainly due to the cost of the vehicle itself and the classification. This section will cover BMW Z4 auto insurance rates and what affects them.
The Z4 BMW is considered a sports car. Therefore, the BMW Z4 insurance cost is somewhat expensive, averaging around $1770 per year nationally for the base model with a typical driver and deductibles.
For the high-performance model, the same policy can average more than $1900 nationally.
It is also important to note that those rates are not guaranteed. More than just the type of vehicle is used to determine your car insurance rates.
Although the age of the car comes into play, you won’t see a significant difference between a 2003 and a 2004 BMW Z4 insurance cost.
A number of variables can affect the amount you personally will pay. Your age, whether you have a clean or blemished driving record, and where you live will affect your auto insurance rates.
Your driving record can have the greatest impact on your car insurance rates since the risk you pose will directly impact your car insurance company.
Take a look at this table that shows you average insurance costs with one traffic ticket, accident, or DUI. You might be surprised at how much your rates will increase.
Average Annual Rates by Driving History
Company | Average Annual Rates with Clean Record | Average Annual Rates with 1 Accident | Average Annual Rates with 1 DUI | Average Annual Rates with 1 Speeding Violation |
---|---|---|---|---|
Allstate | $3,819.90 | $4,987.68 | $6,260.73 | $4,483.51 |
American Family | $2,693.61 | $3,722.75 | $4,330.24 | $3,025.74 |
Farmers | $3,460.60 | $4,518.73 | $4,718.75 | $4,079.01 |
Geico | $2,145.96 | $3,192.77 | $4,875.87 | $2,645.43 |
Liberty Mutual | $4,774.30 | $6,204.78 | $7,613.48 | $5,701.26 |
Nationwide | $2,746.18 | $3,396.95 | $4,543.20 | $3,113.68 |
Progressive | $3,393.09 | $4,777.04 | $3,969.65 | $4,002.28 |
State Farm | $2,821.18 | $3,396.01 | $3,636.80 | $3,186.01 |
Travelers | $3,447.69 | $4,289.74 | $5,741.40 | $4,260.80 |
USAA | $1,933.68 | $2,516.24 | $3,506.03 | $2,193.25 |
A clean driving record will get a car insurance rate of around $260 a month. One speeding ticket will jump that rate up to about $305.
Your credit score, how many miles you drive annually and other factors considered relevant by the insurance industry will also determine your car insurance rates.
Watch this video to learn more about what factors influence your car insurance rates.
These variables can change your cost considerably; for example, a base model Z4 costs on average around $1250 to insure in Maine as compared to an average of nearly $3000 annually in Louisiana. (For more information, read our “Cheap BMW Car Insurance“).
Although it’s been around since 2003, BMW Z4 classic car insurance isn’t an option quite yet, since most classic car insurance requires the car to be at least 20 years old.

BMW Z4 – A Well-Rounded Winner
Since it was first introduced for the 2003 model year, the Z4 has earned high praise for balancing sleek, attractive design with palpable luxury and enough power and performance to satisfy discerning drivers.
Edmunds recently hailed it “one of the most rounded sports cars money can buy.” Its new retractable hardtop roof lowers into the rear trunk in a mere 25 seconds, earning the Z4 a nod from Consumer Guide as “a reasonably practical daily driver convertible.”
The original Z4 won Automobile Magazine’s “Design of the Year Award,” and the current generation followed up in 2009 with the Red Dot Design Award, underscoring the appeal of its lines and styling.
How does the BMW Z4 fare against the competition?
US News ranks the Chevrolet Corvette, Porsche Cayman and Porsche Boxster as top Luxury Sports Car picks for 2011, followed by the Lotus Elise and the Lotus Exige.

All are high-performance sports cars notable for their exceptional speed and/or handling capabilities.
The lower-ranked cars in this class, the Mercedes Benz SLK, the BMW Z4, and the Audi TT, balance substantial but not extreme performance with ample luxury and attractive touring personalities.

US News, therefore, has plenty good to say about the Z4 and, like Edmunds, draws attention to its well-rounded compromise between luxury and performance.
However, if you prefer a rocket on wheels or extreme cornering capability, you might want to consider one of the top-ranked candidates.
All choices on the US News rankings start out in the high $40,00s to low $50,000s with the exception of the pricier Lotus Exige starting at $65,690 and the more moderate Audi TT starting around $37,800.
You’ll also find plenty of used BMZ Z4s for sale, as well as insurers willing to insure them. If this is your preference, try to find a lower-mileage Z4 if possible, preferably with only one lifetime owner.
Check for prior accidents, whether the car has been consistently garaged, whether it was driven in snow, and other important details about its past.
Edmunds prefers models updated as of 2006, but also offers some praise for the earlier 2003 through 2005 generation.

BMW Z4 Available Trim Levels and Features
Is the 2003 BMW Z4 a good car?
The current BMW Z4 has not been crash-tested by major safety evaluation agencies. However, the federal government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tested earlier Z4s from 2003 through 2008 and awarded ratings of four out of five stars on average.
Despite the lack of recent crash tests, attention to safety is apparent in the current Z4’s larger rear window area, which provides excellent visiblilty with minimal blind spots.
In addition, standard car safety features and equipment include:
- Dynamic stability control with traction control
- Anti-lock brakes
- Rollover protection system
- Tire pressure monitoring
- Dual-air bag supplementary restraint system
- Side-impact air bags
- Crash sensor battery disconnect
- Cornering brake control
- Other standard features
Despite this attention to safety, the insurance industry rates sports cars and their drivers as an inherently greater risk than conventional family vehicles and drivers.
The 2011 BMW Z4 offers a single convertible style rather than separate hardtop and convertible options as in the past. When its retractable hardtop roof is stowed in the trunk, there is just enough storage for one or two small overnight bags.
With the roof up, reviewers consider trunk storage to be respectable at 8 cubic feet.
The rear-wheel-drive Z4 comes with three engine options, starting with the base 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder sDrive30i that produces 255 horsepower. This model comes with a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed automatic with shift paddles.
The Z4 sDrive35i has a 300-horsepower 3.0-liter turbocharged I6 engine with more torque, and with the same transmission choices in addition to an optional seven-speed double-clutch automated manual transmission.
More powerful still is the Z4 sDrive35is, equipped with the same 3.0-liter I6 engine, but with an increase to 335 horsepower and more torque as well as an electronically-controlled overboost that briefly boosts torque even further.
The sDrive35is has the seven-speed double-clutch automated manual transmission as standard equipment and an optional M Sport upgrade package whose adaptive suspension offers the choice of normal, sport and sport plus modes.
The sDrive35is thus provides more power and handling capabilities for serious drivers and as such garners a nod of approval from most reviewers happy to see more attention to performance amid the Z4’s luxury styling.
With such wide fluctuations in the potential cost to insure a BMW Z4, it’s more important than ever to compare quotes from leading companies to get affordable car insurance.
Now is as good a time as any to enter your ZIP and begin your quest for cheap car insurance for your BMW Z4.
